Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease that is one of the three major complications of diabetes.

With approximately 20 million people affected, diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of visual impairment in Japan, along with glaucoma.

When you have diabetes, your blood flow becomes poor due to high blood sugar levels.

This causes a variety of diseases in the retina at the back of the eye, which is rich in capillaries.

Diabetic retinopathy is seen in about 40% of diabetic patients and develops several years to more than 10 years after the onset of diabetes.

In some cases, symptoms may not appear until the disease has progressed significantly, so even if you have no symptoms, be sure to get regular checkups.

Treatment options include laser therapy, vitreous injections, and vitreous surgery, depending on the severity of the disease.
